Jaime Fournier

Jaime Fournier (b. 1953, San Juan, Puerto Rico) is a Puerto Rican artist and architect whose five-decade career bridges painting, architecture, and an enduring exploration of memory, place, and identity. He earned a master’s degree in architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in 1976 and later lived and worked in New York and Barcelona. In 1988, he received the AVCO Prize, and his work has been exhibited internationally, including participation in the Santo Domingo, Cuenca, and Monaco Biennials. His paintings are held in permanent collections including MoCHA in New York, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico, and the Art Museum of the Organization of American States in Washington, D.C.

For Fournier, painting begins with a question rather than an answer. His work emerges from the interplay of memory, imagination, lived experience, and the unknown. Through expressive color, gesture, symbols, and recurring motifs, his paintings invite viewers to embrace ambiguity while reflecting on personal and collective histories.

His architectural training informs a practice grounded in structure and spatial awareness, while his experiences living between Puerto Rico, New York, Barcelona, and Tampa have shaped a visual language that is deeply personal and distinctly Caribbean. Each painting becomes a marker within an ongoing journey—a means of preserving memory while questioning certainty in favor of curiosity and discovery.

Fournier’s permanent return to Puerto Rico in 2025 marked a new chapter in his practice, one of synthesis and renewal. Today, he continues to approach painting as an act of exploration, creating works that serve as living archives of memory, identity, and place.
