Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1968, Edwin Guevárez is a Puerto Rican painter and mixed-media artist whose work is distinguished by its vibrant color, expressive figuration, and rich symbolic imagery. He began his artistic training at the Liga de Arte de San Juan under the guidance of Carmelo Sobrino and later continued his studies with Ramiro Pazmiño and Carlos Collazo. He also studied Graphic Arts at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón and painting at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico, furthering his artistic education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Throughout his career, Guevárez has developed a distinctive visual language that explores identity, spirituality, memory, and the human condition. His paintings bring together expressive brushwork, elements of popular culture, religious iconography, and personal symbolism, creating layered narratives that move between introspection, humor, and cultural commentary.
His Hábitos Dulces series exemplifies this approach, reinterpreting traditional sacred imagery through a contemporary lens while drawing on humor, nostalgia, and cultural references. Through this interplay of the sacred and the familiar, Guevárez creates works that invite reflection on collective memory, belief, and contemporary experience.
